Questions & Answers about Wir werden gegen das Urteil Protest einlegen.
How does the Nomen-Verb-Verbindung (noun-verb construction) Protest einlegen connect to the rest of the sentence?
The phrase Protest einlegen (to lodge a protest) is paired with the preposition gegen to specify what you are protesting. In these constructions, the preposition is usually determined by the noun (der Protest) or the equivalent base verb (protestieren). Since you protest against something, the whole phrase becomes gegen etwas Protest einlegen.
Could I just say Wir werden gegen das Urteil protestieren? What is the difference?
Yes, grammatically you could use the simple verb protestieren. However, Noun-Verb constructions like Protest einlegen are standard in formal, administrative, or legal contexts (like reacting to a verdict, or Urteil). It elevates the tone, exactly like choosing to lodge a protest over to protest in English.
Why are Protest and einlegen placed right next to each other at the end of the sentence?
This sentence uses the future tense, which puts the conjugated helper verb werden in position 2 and the infinitive einlegen at the very end. In Noun-Verb constructions, the noun (Protest) forms a tight unit with the verb, almost like a separable prefix, so it sits directly in front of the infinitive at the end of the clause.
What case does gegen trigger for das Urteil?
The preposition gegen is a strict accusative preposition. It always forces the following noun into the accusative case. Because das Urteil (the verdict) is a neuter noun, its accusative form looks identical to its nominative form, which is a good reminder for B2 learners not to overthink neuter and feminine accusative objects.
