Questions & Answers about Das Wetter ist extrem, infolgedessen verschwindet das ganze Ökosystem.
Why is the verb verschwindet right after infolgedessen instead of at the end of the sentence?
Because infolgedessen is an adverbial connector, not a subordinating conjunction (like weil or dass), so it doesn't send the verb to the end. Instead, it takes up the first spot (Position 1) in a new main clause. Since the verb must take Position 2, verschwindet comes immediately after the connector, which pushes the subject (das ganze Ökosystem) to the other side of the verb.
What is the literal breakdown of the word infolgedessen?
It is formed by merging three parts: in + Folge (consequence) + dessen (a genitive pronoun meaning "of that"). Literally, it means "in consequence of that." When used as an adverbial connector, it is always written together as one solid word.
Could I split this into two separate sentences instead of using a comma?
Yes, absolutely. Because infolgedessen introduces a standard main clause, it is completely grammatically correct to replace the comma with a period or a semicolon: Das Wetter ist extrem. Infolgedessen verschwindet das ganze Ökosystem. You will frequently see consecutive connectors used at the start of a brand-new sentence in written German.
Why does the adjective ganze end in -e here?
Ökosystem is a neuter noun (das Ökosystem) and it acts as the subject (nominative case) of the second clause. Because the adjective comes right after a definite article (das), it takes the "weak" adjective declension. For nominative singular nouns of any gender, that weak ending is always just -e.
