Questions & Answers about Zu viel Stress belastet einen auf jeden Fall.
Why does this sentence use einen instead of man to mean "you"?
man is the nominative (subject) form. In this sentence, the subject is Zu viel Stress (too much stress). The person being burdened is the direct object, so we need the accusative form of man, which is einen. It translates to "one" or a general "you".
How do I know whether to use einen or einem here?
It depends entirely on the verb! The verb belasten (to burden or strain) takes a direct object, which requires the accusative case. Therefore, you must use the accusative form einen. If the verb was one that required the dative case (like helfen or schaden), you would use the dative form einem instead.
Could I just say Zu viel Stress belastet dich auf jeden Fall?
Yes, but it changes the tone slightly. Using dich (you - accusative) makes the sentence specifically about the person you are talking to. Using einen makes it a general statement that applies to people in general, similar to saying "Too much stress burdens a person."
The English translation says "definitely", but where is that in the German sentence?
That comes from the phrase auf jeden Fall. It translates literally to "on every case". In German, this is a very common, fixed expression used to mean "definitely", "absolutely", or "in any case".
