Questions & Answers about Mein Sternzeichen wird meine Zukunft nicht beeinflussen.
How do we know this sentence is in the future tense?
The future tense (Futur I) is formed using a conjugated form of werden (here, wird for the 'it' form) in the second position, and placing the main verb beeinflussen at the very end in its infinitive form.
Why is nicht placed near the end of the sentence instead of right after wird?
In German, when you negate the main action of a sentence, nicht usually goes right before the main verb. Since the future tense pushes the main verb (beeinflussen) to the very end, nicht lands right in front of it.
Why does the sentence use mein for the zodiac sign but meine for the future?
The possessive word has to match the gender of the noun. Sternzeichen is a neuter noun (das Sternzeichen), so it takes mein. Zukunft is a feminine noun (die Zukunft), so it gets the feminine ending -e, becoming meine.
What makes up the word Sternzeichen?
Like many German words, it is a compound noun. It combines Stern (star) and Zeichen (sign) to literally mean 'star sign'. The gender of a compound noun always comes from its last word, which is why it is das Sternzeichen.
