Questions & Answers about Italien hat viele Touristen, aber Frankreich hat mehr.
Why is it mehr instead of a regular comparative form like 'vieler'?
mehr is the irregular comparative form of viel (much/many). Just like in English where you say 'more' instead of 'manyer', German simply uses mehr.
Why doesn't mehr get an ending here, since viele has an -e?
Unlike most other describing words in German, mehr is invariable. This means it never takes an ending to match the gender or plural of the noun it talks about. It is always just mehr, never 'mehre'.
Does the word aber change the verb order in the second half of the sentence?
No, aber (but) is a 'position zero' conjunction. It connects two complete sentences without taking up a slot in the second one. This means the subject Frankreich takes position one, and the verb hat stays perfectly in position two.
Why don't the countries Italien and Frankreich have an article like das in front of them?
