Questions & Answers about Der Bus ist leider unbequemer.
Why is it unbequemer instead of mehr unbequem?
In English, we usually add the word "more" to longer adjectives (like "more uncomfortable"). But in German, you almost always form the comparative by simply adding -er to the end of the adjective, no matter how long the word is! So unbequem just becomes unbequemer.
Does unbequemer need an extra adjective ending here?
No. Because the adjective comes after the verb (ist) and isn't placed directly in front of a noun, it doesn't need any grammatical case endings. You just use the basic comparative form unbequemer.
Do I need to add an umlaut to unbequem when making it comparative?
Not for this word. While some common short adjectives get an umlaut in the comparative (like kalt becoming kälter), unbequem is completely regular. Just add -er and you are done.
Why is leider placed after the verb?
In a standard German sentence, the conjugated verb (ist) must be strictly in the second position. Since the subject Der Bus takes up the first position, the adverb leider (unfortunately) naturally tucks in right after the verb.
