Questions & Answers about Am Wochenende bin ich zu Hause.
Why is it bin ich instead of ich bin?
In German, the main verb must be the second idea (or element) in a regular sentence. Because this sentence starts with the time phrase Am Wochenende (At the weekend), the verb bin has to come next to stay in the second position. The subject ich is then pushed right after it.
Why do we use am before Wochenende?
The word am is a combination of the preposition an (on/at) and the word dem (the). In German, days of the week and the weekend usually take an plus dem, which shrinks down to the short word am.
Doesn't zu usually mean to? Why does it mean at here?
You are right that zu often means to, but zu Hause is a special fixed expression that means at home. If you want to say you are going home, you would use a different expression: nach Hause.
Why does Hause have an e at the end? Isn't the word for house just Haus?
The normal word for house is indeed Haus. The extra e on the end of Hause is a leftover from an old German grammar rule. Today, you will only see it in a few fixed phrases like zu Hause (at home) and nach Hause (going home).
