Questions & Answers about Wir haben dreißig oder vierzig Leute eingeladen.
Why is dreißig spelled with an ß but vierzig uses a z?
Most 'tens' in German end in -zig, like vierzig (forty) and fünfzig (fifty). But dreißig (thirty) is the only exception! It uses an ß (called an Eszett) instead of a z. You just have to memorize this one special spelling.
Is Leute plural or singular?
Leute means 'people' and it is always a plural word. There is no singular form of Leute. If you want to say 'one person', you would use a completely different word: eine Person.
Why does eingeladen have the -ge- in the middle instead of at the beginning?
The verb for 'to invite' is einladen. It is a 'separable verb', meaning the prefix ein- can split off. When making the past tense form, the -ge- goes between the prefix and the main part of the verb. So, ein + ge + laden becomes eingeladen.
Why is eingeladen at the very end of the sentence?
