Usages of ist
Das Haus ist klein.
The house is small.
Das Auto ist gross.
The car is big.
Die Pizza ist schlecht.
The pizza is bad.
actually this can also mean, and even would most of the times:
the pizza is spoiled.
When comes to food, we would rather say schmeckt nicht (gut), meaning doesn't taste good
The word gut is optional in the German sentence.
Der Mann ist gross.
The man is big. (tall)
Das Kind ist klein.
The child is small.
Der Kaffee ist gut.
The coffee is good.
Die Pizza ist gross.
The pizza is big
Der Komputer ist schlecht.
The computer is bad.
Die Frau ist nicht so gross.
The woman is not so tall
Der Komputer ist so langsam.
The computer is so slow.
Das Auto ist schnell.
The car is fast.
Die Frau ist nicht so langsam wie der Mann.
The woman is not as slow as the man.
Das Kind ist nicht so schnell wie ich.
The child is not as fast as I.

Is the child big or small?
Ist der Kaffee gut oder schlecht?
Is the coffee good or bad?

Der langsame Komputer ist schlecht.
The slow computer is bad.
Now we have combined them both:
- langsam is adjective and gets the 'e'
- schlecht is an adverb (it follows' is...') and therefore is unchangeable.

Der grosse Kaffee ist gut.
The big coffee is good.
Das kleine Auto ist schnell und das grosse Auto ist langsam.
The small car is fast and the big car is slow.

Watch out for the word order! Whenever we start the sentence with a time expression the verb moves before the subject.

Die Pause ist vorbei.
The break is over.
Er ist ganz woanders mit seinen Gedanken.
He is completely elsewhere with his thoughts.
= Er ist mit seinen Gedanken ganz woanders

Is the beautiful woman also there again? He wonders whether...
