Too Extreme for Reality
Sometimes a situation is so extreme that a certain outcome becomes impossible. In English, we might say a soup is "too disgusting to eat" or a noise is "too loud for me to sleep."
In German, you express these impossible consequences using zu + [adjective], followed by als dass and the Konjunktiv II.
- Place zu directly before the adjective.
- Start the dependent clause with a comma followed by als dass (literally "than that").
- Because the outcome is impossible, the dependent clause requires the Konjunktiv II (forms like könnte, wäre, or würde).
- als dass acts as a subordinating conjunction, which sends the conjugated verb to the end of the sentence.
| The soup is too disgusting for me to eat. | Die Suppe ist zu ekelhaft, als dass ich sie essen könnte. |
| The stench is too awful for us to stay. | Der Gestank ist zu schrecklich, als dass wir bleiben würden. |
Everyday Annoyances
Use the modal verb könnte (could) in the dependent clause to express being physically or mentally unable to do something because of extreme conditions.
| The cold is too bad for me to sleep on the mattress. | Die Kälte ist zu schlimm, als dass ich auf der Matratze schlafen könnte. |
| The stain is too stubborn for me to remove it. | Der Fleck ist zu hartnäckig, als dass ich ihn entfernen könnte. |
If the consequence describes an impossible state rather than an action, use wäre (would be) instead of könnte.
| The writing is too tiny for it to be legible to me. | Die Schrift ist zu winzig, als dass sie für mich lesbar wäre. |
Actions and Distractions
This structure is highly versatile, whether you're dealing with a loud noise or a stubborn personality.
| The noise is too loud for me to fall asleep. | Das Geräusch ist zu laut, als dass ich einschlafen könnte. |
| She is too stubborn to forgive you now. | Sie ist zu stur, als dass sie dir jetzt verzeihen würde. |
You can also use zu sehr (too much) instead of a regular adjective if you need to describe an action that is happening to an extreme degree.
| The noise distracts me too much for me to concentrate. | Der Lärm lenkt mich zu sehr ab, als dass ich mich konzentrieren könnte. |
