Adjectives of worth (-wert, -würdig)

Recommending the Best: Adjectives of Worth (-wert and -würdig)

In German, you can express that something is worthy of an action using the adjective suffixes -wert and -würdig (meaning worth or -worthy). These are perfect for evaluating travel highlights.

The Suffix -wert

The suffix -wert comes from the noun der Wert (value). Attach it to a verb stem or a noun to describe something worth doing. For example, combining sehen (to see) with -wert creates sehenswert (worth seeing).

When used after the verb, it takes no ending:

This historical palace is really worth seeing and a real insider tip.
Dieser historische Palast ist wirklich sehenswert und ein echter Geheimtipp.

Other common examples include empfehlenswert (recommendable) and lohnenswert (worthwhile):

The small restaurant at the port is highly recommendable and remains our insider tip.
Das kleine Restaurant am Hafen ist sehr empfehlenswert und bleibt unser Geheimtipp.
An excursion up the mountain is worthwhile because the view is beautiful.
Ein Ausflug auf den Berg ist lohnenswert, weil die Aussicht wunderschön ist.

When placed directly before a noun, these words take standard adjective declension endings based on case, gender, and number. Notice the ending on preiswert (inexpensive) here:

We are looking for an inexpensive hotel before we begin the journey.
Wir suchen ein preiswertes Hotel, ehe wir die Reise beginnen.

The Suffix -würdig

The suffix -würdig comes from würdig (worthy). It translates neatly to the English suffix -worthy. It is often used to evaluate reliability, such as vertrauenswürdig (trustworthy) or fragwürdig (questionable):

This travel guide is trustworthy, but that agency is questionable.
Dieser Reiseführer ist vertrauenswürdig, aber jene Agentur ist fragwürdig.

Remember to apply the correct ending if the adjective precedes a noun:

You must check this questionable offer before you sign the contract.
Du musst dieses fragwürdige Angebot prüfen, ehe du den Vertrag unterschreibst.

Remarkable and Memorable Highlights

While -wert and -würdig serve identical grammatical functions, they are not interchangeable. Certain words pair exclusively with one suffix. For example, an event worth remembering is denkwürdig (memorable), while a notable detail is bemerkenswert (remarkable). You will naturally pick these up as vocabulary:

The excursion was worthwhile and memorable.
Der Ausflug war lohnenswert und denkwürdig.
It is remarkable that the real estate agent appears so trustworthy and competent.
Es ist bemerkenswert, dass der Makler so vertrauenswürdig und kompetent wirkt.
