Question 1

Why use toutefois here instead of just mais?

Accepted Answer

While mais works perfectly fine, toutefois elevates the register. It is used in structured argumentation, often in writing or formal speech, to introduce a contrast or concession. You can think of it as the second half of an argument where the first half has an implied certes (admittedly): [Certes,] le projet est cher ; toutefois...

Question 2

Is there a difference between toutefois, cependant, and pourtant?

Accepted Answer

At a B2 level, you can generally use them interchangeably to mean however or yet. If we want to be very precise, toutefois is slightly more formal and often introduces a logical restriction to what was just said, whereas pourtant emphasizes a stronger, more surprising contradiction. Here, any of them would work well to contrast the cost and the utility.

Question 3

Notice the semicolon before toutefois. Is this punctuation required?

Accepted Answer

In formal French writing, adverbs like toutefois, cependant, or néanmoins are typically preceded by a period or a semicolon because they connect two full, independent clauses. Unlike in English, you do not strictly need a comma immediately after toutefois, though adding one is also acceptable.

Question 4

Could I say toutefois, c'est utile instead of il est utile?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you could say c'est utile, but il est utile sounds slightly more formal and directly references the specific masculine noun le projet. When you use il est followed by a bare adjective, you are keeping the focus tightly on that specific noun. Using c'est would make the statement feel a bit more like a broad, general opinion.
