Questions & Answers about Il est enseignant.
Why is there no article before enseignant here, when in English we say 'He is a teacher'?
In French, when you state someone's profession using il est or elle est, the profession acts like an adjective describing the subject. Because of this, you drop the indefinite article (un or une). You only use an article when stating a profession if you use the pronoun c'est, such as C'est un enseignant.
If I wanted to add an adjective and say 'He is a good teacher', would I say Il est bon enseignant?
What is the difference between enseignant and professeur?
Enseignant is a broad, slightly formal term for anyone whose profession is teaching, similar to 'educator' or 'instructor'. Professeur (often shortened to prof) is generally used for specific teachers from middle school up through university. Both translate to 'teacher', but enseignant is often used in administrative or official contexts.
