Question 1

Why do we use cercle here instead of rond?

Accepted Answer

While both translate to circle or round, un cercle is the precise mathematical or geometric term. Un rond is used in everyday language for round shapes or objects, like a coffee stain or a roundabout (un rond-point). Because this sentence specifically talks about geometry (géométrique), cercle is the natural choice.

Question 2

Both géométrique and très simple come after the noun forme. Is there a rule for their order?

Accepted Answer

Yes. In French, classifying adjectives that define a strict category (like géométrique, médical, or historique) are placed directly next to the noun. Descriptive adjectives (like simple) come after them. Therefore, it has to be une forme géométrique très simple, rather than une forme très simple géométrique.

Question 3

Why is the word simple used here instead of facile?

Accepted Answer

Simple is the opposite of complex, describing the structure or nature of something. Facile is the opposite of difficult, describing the amount of effort needed to perform an action. A shape itself is structurally basic, so it is simple. If you were talking about the act of drawing it, you would use facile, as in C'est une forme facile à dessiner.

Question 4

Does the adjective géométrique have a different masculine form?

Accepted Answer

No, it stays exactly the same. Adjectives that end in -e in their base masculine form, including all adjectives ending in the suffix -ique, are epicene. This means they have a single identical form for both masculine and feminine nouns. If you were describing a masculine noun like un dessin (a drawing), it would still be un dessin géométrique.
