Questions & Answers about Dès que les gens auront migré, la densité urbaine augmentera.
Why does the French sentence use the future perfect (auront migré) when the English translation uses the present perfect ('have migrated')?
In French, when a future action will be completed before another future action, and you use a time word like dès que (as soon as) or quand (when), you must use the future perfect (le futur antérieur). English often uses the present or present perfect tense in these clauses, but French strictly requires a future tense after these time words if the main event is in the future.
Does the second verb, augmentera, also need to be in the future perfect?
No, augmentera is in the simple future tense. This creates a logical timeline: first, the people will have finished migrating (auront migré), and then, as a result, the density will increase (augmentera). The simple future is used for the main event that happens second.
Why is there no 's' at the end of migré if les gens is plural?
Because the auxiliary (helping) verb is avoir (auront). With avoir, the past participle (migré) does not change to agree with the subject. It would only change if there were a direct object placed before the verb, which is not the case in this sentence.
Could I use les personnes instead of les gens here?
