Why does aimer, which usually means 'to like' or 'to love', mean 'would like' here?
The verb is in a special form called the conditional. Adding the -ais ending changes 'I like' to the softer, more polite 'I would like'. Using j'aimerais is the standard way to make polite requests or express wishes in French.
Could I just say Je veux renouveler instead of J'aimerais renouveler?
