Questions & Answers about Les citoyens attendront l'élection.
How do you form the future tense for a regular -re verb like attendre?
To form the futur simple for a regular -re verb, you take the infinitive (attendre), drop the final -e to get your stem (attendr-), and then add the future endings. Since les citoyens is a "they" plural subject, we add the ending -ont to get attendront.
The English translation says "wait for", but I don't see a word for "for" in the French sentence. Why?
The French verb attendre actually means "to wait for" all by itself. You don't need to add a preposition like pour. So, "to wait for the election" is directly translated as attendre l'élection.
I'm used to plural "they" verbs ending in -ent. Why does this one end in -ont?
That is a huge difference between the present tense and the future tense! While the present tense "they" form usually ends in a silent -ent (like ils attendent), the futur simple "they" form always ends in -ont (like ils attendront). Unlike the present tense ending, you must clearly pronounce this -ont ending.
Is élection always feminine, and why does it have an accent when the English word doesn't?
Yes, almost all French words ending in -tion are feminine. While French and English share many of these -tion words, French often adds an acute accent (é) at the beginning to match its own pronunciation rules, so you will see this spelling difference often.
