Où est-ce que tu m'emmènes aujourd'hui ?

Questions & Answers about Où est-ce que tu m'emmènes aujourd'hui ?

Why does emmènes have a grave accent (è) when the dictionary verb is emmener?
Emmener (to take someone) is a stem-changing verb. For pronunciation reasons, the unaccented e in the middle changes to è whenever the verb ending is silent. Since the -es ending for tu is silent, we write tu emmènes. You will see this same change for je, il/elle, and ils/elles, but not for nous or vous.
Why use emmener instead of prendre or apporter for "taking"?
In French, the verb you use for "to take" depends on what you are taking. You use emmener when you are leading a person or an animal somewhere with you. If you were taking an inanimate object somewhere, you would use emporter. Prendre is mostly used for physically grabbing something with your hands or taking a mode of transport.
Why does me become m' and go before the verb?
In French, object pronouns like me (which means "me" in this context) go directly before the verb they belong to. Instead of saying "you take me", French says "you me take". Because emmènes starts with a vowel, me drops its e and attaches to the verb as m' to make it flow more smoothly when spoken.
Could I ask this question without using est-ce que?
Yes! Adding est-ce que after a question word like is standard and very common. However, in casual everyday speech, you could just say tu m'emmènes aujourd'hui ? or even put the question word at the very end: Tu m'emmènes où aujourd'hui ?
