Why does the verb change to buvons? I thought the verb was boire.
Boire (to drink) is an irregular verb. While the singular forms keep the 'oi' sound (je bois, tu bois, il boit), the nous and vous forms change the stem completely to 'uv': nous buvons and vous buvez.
Why does the English translation say 'having a drink' instead of 'drinking'?
In English, we often say 'to have a drink,' but in French, you don't use the verb avoir (to have) for this. You strictly use boire. Furthermore, French doesn't have an '-ing' tense, so nous buvons translates to both 'we drink' and 'we are drinking'.
Does un verre literally mean 'a drink'?
Literally, un verre means 'a glass'. But the expression boire un verre is the most common way to say 'to have a drink' in French, whether you're at a café, a bar, or someone's house.
Why use sur here instead of dans?
Sur means 'on'. Just like in English, you are 'on' a terrace (sur la terrasse) rather than 'in' it (dans), because it is considered an open, flat surface.
