Questions & Answers about Le chat est sur la table !
The current lesson is about un and une. Why does this sentence use le and la?
un and une mean "a" or "an" (indefinite articles). Because this sentence says "the cat" and "the table", it uses the definite articles le (masculine "the") and la (feminine "the"). The gender rules are exactly the same though! If we changed it to "a cat is on a table", it would be un chat est sur une table.
Why is it le chat but la table?
Does using le chat mean this specific cat is definitely male?
