Questions & Answers about Uuden talon ovi on valkoinen.
Why is the word for "new" written as uuden instead of uusi?
In Finnish, adjectives must match the form of the noun they describe. Because "house" is in the genitive (possessive) form talon, the adjective uusi must also be in the genitive form, which is uuden.
Where does the "d" in uuden come from?
The basic word is uusi, but words ending in -si usually change their stem to -te- when you add endings (making it uute-). When we add the genitive ending -n, it triggers a rule called consonant gradation. This softens the strong t into a weak d, resulting in uuden.
Why are uuden and talon placed before ovi?
Finnish builds possessive phrases strictly in the order of "owner + owned". It works exactly like the English "the new house's door". The words in the genitive case (uuden talon) must come right before the noun they own (ovi). You cannot swap the order to mean "the door of the new house".
Why doesn't valkoinen match the genitive case like uuden does?
