Questions & Answers about Vanha sarana osoittautui yllättäväksi mekanismiksi.
Why do both yllättäväksi and mekanismiksi end in -ksi?
The verb osoittautua (to turn out to be) requires the translative case for the outcome, which describes a change of state or an adopted role. In Finnish, adjectives must agree in case with the noun they modify, so both the adjective yllättävä (surprising) and the noun mekanismi (mechanism) must take the translative -ksi ending.
Is osoittautua related to the verb osoittaa (to show or point)?
Yes! Osoittautua is a reflexive verb derived from osoittaa. While osoittaa means someone shows or points at something else, the -utua suffix changes it so the subject does the action to itself. It literally means something shows itself to be something, which we naturally translate into English as "to turn out to be".
What kind of word is yllättävä and why does it act like an adjective here?
Yllättävä is a participle formed from the verb yllättää (to surprise). Specifically, it is the present active participle (the VA-participle), which behaves just like an English adjective ending in "-ing" (surprising). Because it functions as a regular adjective, it smoothly takes case endings like the translative -ksi.
