Questions & Answers about Monimuotoisuuden säilyminen on tärkeää meidän kannaltamme.
Let's break down kannaltamme. How is this postposition constructed?
It comes from the noun kanta (base, stance, or position). It takes the ablative case ending -lta (from), making kannalta (from the perspective of). Finally, because it is governed by meidän (our), it takes the matching first-person plural possessive suffix -mme.
Is it mandatory to include the pronoun meidän in this sentence?
No, you can omit it. In Finnish, when using first and second-person pronouns, the possessive suffix on the postposition provides enough information. You could perfectly well say ...on tärkeää kannaltamme, and it would still mean 'from our perspective'.
Why is the adjective tärkeää in the partitive case rather than the nominative tärkeä?
When the subject of a 'to be' sentence is an abstract concept or an activity—in this case, the verbal noun säilyminen (preservation)—the complement adjective describing it is generally put into the partitive case.
What is the root verb of säilyminen, and how does it function here?
The root is säilyä, an intransitive verb meaning 'to remain' or 'to be preserved'. By changing the infinitive ending to -minen, it becomes a verbal noun (often called the fourth infinitive) meaning 'preservation' or 'the act of remaining', which acts as the subject of the sentence.
