Postpositions of perspective (kannalta)

Evaluating Perspectives: Kannalta

To state a viewpoint, analyze a situation, or evaluate impacts, use the postposition kannalta. It translates to "from the perspective of" or "in terms of".

Like most Finnish postpositions, kannalta requires the preceding noun to be in the genitive case (ending in -n). For example, ekosysteemi (ecosystem) becomes ekosysteemin.

From the perspective of the ecosystem, this forest is critical.
Ekosysteemin kannalta tämä metsä on kriittinen.

Possessive Suffixes

If the perspective belongs to a pronoun, kannalta takes a possessive suffix. For meidän (our), add the suffix -mme to form kannaltamme. The genitive pronoun itself usually remains in front of the postposition.

The preservation of biodiversity is important from our perspective.
Monimuotoisuuden säilyminen on tärkeää meidän kannaltamme.

Placement

Placing the postpositional phrase at the beginning of the sentence establishes the viewpoint right away.

From the food chain's perspective, balance is necessary.
Ravintoketjun kannalta tasapaino on välttämätön.
From the animals' perspective, extinction is a critical threat.
Eläinten kannalta sukupuutto on kriittinen uhka.

However, it can also comfortably sit at the end of the clause.

Is agriculture a threat in terms of biodiversity?
Onko maatalous uhka monimuotoisuuden kannalta?
In terms of the species' survival, these conservation areas are critical.
Lajin säilymisen kannalta nämä suojelualueet ovat kriittisiä.
