Questions & Answers about Nahkatakki päällä ja aurinkolasit päässä on epäsopiva asu yökerhoon.
Why do we use päällä for the leather jacket but päässä for the sunglasses?
For clothing worn on the torso or the whole body, Finnish uses the external case päällä (literally "on top of"). However, for items worn on the head or extremities (like sunglasses, hats, or gloves), you use the internal case päässä or kädessä (literally "in the head" or "in the hand").
The first half of the sentence lacks a verb. How does Nahkatakki päällä work grammatically here?
Finnish frequently uses a noun paired with a locative word (like päällä or päässä) to describe a state of dress, acting as a noun phrase. Here, the entire phrase Nahkatakki päällä ja aurinkolasit päässä acts as a single conceptual subject meaning "Wearing a leather jacket and sunglasses".
Since aurinkolasit is plural, shouldn't the verb be ovat instead of on?
No, because aurinkolasit is not the core subject driving the verb. The subject is the entire concept of wearing that combination of items. When a state, concept, or action functions as the subject, the verb always takes the singular third-person form on.
Why is "for a nightclub" translated with the illative case yökerhoon instead of a case like the allative?
