Clothing spatial cases (päässä, jalassa)

Nightclub Dress Codes

When you want to get into a nightclub, you have to get past the bouncer (portsari). If the venue has rules about what you can wear, you will need to pay attention to your outfit.

The bouncer said that the nightclub's dress code is strict.
Portsari sanoi, että yökerhon pukukoodi on tiukka.

Wearing Clothes on the Torso

In English, you say you "have a jacket on." Finnish also uses the "to have" structure (e.g., minulla on = I have), but pairs it with a spatial word indicating exactly where the clothing sits.

For general clothing and items worn on your torso (like a shirt, hoodie, or jacket), you use the external location word päällä (literally "on top").

Why do you have a leather jacket on in the nightclub?
Miksi sinulla on nahkatakki päällä yökerhossa?
In the bouncer's opinion, that dirty shirt on is inappropriate.
Portsarin mielestä tuo likainen paita päällä on epäsopiva.

Extremities and the Head

Finnish gets very specific with clothing worn on the head or limbs. Instead of a general "on," Finnish treats the head, feet, hands, and neck as containers for your clothing. To express wearing these items, you use the Inessive case (-ssa / -ssä, meaning "in") of the relevant body part.

Here are the specific forms you must use instead of päällä:

  • Feet and legs: jalassa (in the foot/leg)
  • Head: päässä (in the head)
  • Neck: kaulassa (in the neck)
  • Hands: kädessä (in the hand)

So, if you are wearing sneakers, they are worn jalassa.

The man who has sneakers on will not get in.
Mies, jolla on lenkkarit jalassa, ei pääse sisään.

When describing a formal outfit, you combine these rules: a collared shirt goes on the torso (päällä), while a tie wraps around the neck (kaulassa).

When you have a collared shirt on and a tie around your neck, you are formal.
Kun sinulla on kauluspaita päällä ja kravatti kaulassa, olet juhlava.

The same logic applies to accessories. Sunglasses go "in the head" (päässä).

A leather jacket on and sunglasses on the head is an inappropriate outfit for a nightclub.
Nahkatakki päällä ja aurinkolasit päässä on epäsopiva asu yökerhoon.

Casual Wear and Winter Gear

If your outfit is too casual, the bouncer might reject you. Because sweatpants are worn on the legs, they are also worn jalassa. A hoodie, covering the torso, is worn päällä.

You won't be let into the nightclub if you have a hoodie and sweatpants on.
Sinua ei päästetä yökerhoon, jos sinulla on huppari päällä ja verryttelyhousut jalassa.

Finally, if it is cold outside, you might be wearing gloves. These are worn "in the hand" (kädessä).
