Questions & Answers about Murha oli arvoitus, koska uhria ei ollut löydetty.
How exactly is the negative passive pluperfect formed in ei ollut löydetty?
It uses three parts: the negative word ei, the active past participle ollut, and the passive past participle of the main verb (löydetty). Notice that the helping verb olla stays in the active form! A very common mistake is trying to use the passive form "oltu", but for the perfect and pluperfect tenses, the auxiliary verb is always active.
Why is uhria in the partitive case?
Because it is the object of a negative sentence. The unbreakable rule in Finnish is that if an action does not happen, the object of that action must take the partitive case. The base word is uhri (victim).
Wait, is uhria the object? In the English translation, "the victim" is the subject.
The Finnish passive works differently from the English passive! It is usually better to think of it as an unspecified "someone" doing the action. So grammatically, the structure is closer to "someone had not found the victim", which clearly makes the victim the direct object receiving the action.
What is the base verb for löydetty, and why did the t change to a d?
The dictionary form is löytää (to find). When we add the passive ending, the syllable becomes closed. This triggers consonant gradation, weakening the strong t into a d.
