Questions & Answers about Sä et oo muistuttanu mua!
Why does the past participle muistuttanu lack a final 't'?
In standard Finnish, the active past participle ends in -t, making the word muistuttanut here. However, in spoken Finnish (puhekieli), it is extremely common to drop this final -t. You will hear this happening with almost all verbs in the perfect and pluperfect tenses.
Where does the word oo come from in et oo?
It is the colloquial form of ole. The standard Finnish negative perfect tense here would be et ole (you haven't). In spoken language, ole frequently drops its middle consonant and final vowel to become just oo.
Why is the pronoun mua in the partitive case here instead of the accusative?
The verb muistuttaa (to remind) requires the person being reminded to be in the partitive case. Mua is simply the spoken version of the partitive pronoun minua (me).
Is muistuttaa related to the basic verb muistaa (to remember)?
Yes! Muistuttaa is a causative verb derived from muistaa. Adding the -ttaa suffix to certain verbs changes the meaning from doing an action yourself to causing someone else to do it. So, 'causing someone to remember' becomes 'to remind'.
