Questions & Answers about Minäkään en ole pirteä.
Why is -kään attached to minä rather than the verb?
The clitic -kaan/-kään attaches to the specific word you want to emphasize. Because the sentence means "I am not energetic either" (someone else isn't, and neither am I), the clitic goes directly onto the pronoun minä.
Why does this sentence use -kään instead of -kaan?
This is due to vowel harmony. The word minä contains front vowels (i, ä), so it must take the front-vowel version of the clitic, which is -kään.
Why is the verb ole instead of olen?
In Finnish negative sentences, only the negative word (en, et, ei, etc.) gets conjugated with a personal ending. The main verb drops its ending and stays in its base negative form. So olen (I am) becomes en ole (I am not).
What kind of "energetic" does pirteä describe?
Pirteä specifically means energetic in the sense of being alert, perky, and wide awake. You will often hear it used to describe someone's mood in the morning—it's the exact opposite of being sleepy or groggy!
