Questions & Answers about Tämä uusi menetelmä toimii nopeammin.
How do we form the comparative adverb nopeammin?
The base adjective is nopea (fast). To describe how something is done, you use an adverb. Instead of the basic adverb nopeasti (fast), we want the comparative form (faster). We build this by taking the word's vowel stem (nopea-) and adding the comparative adverb suffix -mmin.
Could I say "Tämä uusi menetelmä toimii nopeampi"?
No, because nopeampi is the comparative adjective, which is used to describe nouns (for example, nopeampi menetelmä means "a faster method"). Here, you are describing the verb toimii (how it works), so you must use the comparative adverb nopeammin.
Why use toimii for "works" instead of työskentelee?
The verb työskennellä is strictly for people doing a job or working. When you are talking about a machine, a system, a plan, or a method functioning, you use the verb toimia.
If I wanted to say "These new methods work faster", does nopeammin change?
No, adverbs describe verbs and do not take plural endings! The subject and verb would change to plural (Nämä uudet menetelmät toimivat), but the adverb nopeammin stays exactly the same.
