Questions & Answers about En tarvinnut apua, koska tämä liike on helppo.
How do we get tarvinnut from the verb tarvita?
Tarvita is a Type 5 verb. To form the past participle for a negative past tense sentence, you take the consonant stem tarvit- and add the ending -nut. The t and the n assimilate (blend together) to become nn, giving us tarvinnut.
Why is the word for help (apu) in the partitive case (apua)?
The object of a negative sentence in Finnish must always be in the partitive case. Since the sentence says en tarvinnut (I didn't need), the object apu becomes apua.
Does the word liike always mean a physical move?
No! While it means move or movement in physical contexts, in everyday Finnish liike is also a very common word for a shop, a store, or a business.
Why isn't the word minä (I) at the start of the sentence?
In Finnish, you can often drop the pronouns minä (I) and sinä (you) because the verb already tells you who is doing the action. The negative verb en can only mean I, so the sentence is perfectly clear without minä.
