Dashed Expectations: "Ei kuitenkaan"
When critiquing a movie's plot twist or execution, things don't always turn out as expected.
To express "however," "anyway," or "after all" in Finnish, you normally use the adverb kuitenkin. However, Finnish has strict rules for negative sentences. When you make a negative statement (using en, et, ei, eivät, jne.), you must use its negative polarity form: kuitenkaan.
Just as the clitic -kin (also/too) changes to -kaan or -kään in negative clauses, kuitenkin automatically becomes kuitenkaan.
| The movie's plot was good, but the twist didn't surprise me after all. | Elokuvan juoni oli hyvä, mutta käänne ei kuitenkaan yllättänyt minua. |
| The ending wasn't predictable, but it wasn't convincing anyway. | Loppu ei ollut ennalta-arvattava, mutta se ei kuitenkaan ollut vakuuttava. |
| The screenwriter didn't write a predictable story after all. | Käsikirjoittaja ei kuitenkaan kirjoittanut ennalta-arvattavaa tarinaa. |
Both... And...
To emphasize that multiple aspects of a production stand out, you can use the conjunction pair sekä ... että ... to mean "both ... and ...".
| Both the director and the screenwriter did convincing work. | Sekä ohjaaja että käsikirjoittaja tekivät vakuuttavaa työtä. |
| Both the movie's ending and its execution were very tragic. | Sekä elokuvan loppu että sen toteutus olivat hyvin traagisia. |
Fulfilling Expectations
A common phrase when reviewing movies is lunastaa odotukset (to fulfill expectations). You will often see kuitenkaan used when a movie's special effects (tehosteet) or climax (huippukohta) fail to live up to their promise.
| The visual execution was beautiful, but the special effects didn't work after all. | Visuaalinen toteutus oli kaunis, mutta tehosteet eivät kuitenkaan toimineet. |
| The movie's climax didn't fulfill expectations after all. | Elokuvan huippukohta ei kuitenkaan lunastanut odotuksia. |
