Expressing Your Stance
Attitude adverbs express your perspective on an entire statement—such as whether a fact is unfortunate, undeniable, or apparent. They are perfect for sharing your thoughts on a new asu (outfit) or mallisto (collection).
To set the tone immediately, place the attitude adverb at the very beginning of the sentence.
| Unfortunately, this outfit is too expensive for me. | Valitettavasti tämä asu on minulle liian kallis. |
| Apparently, this accessory is now really popular. | Ilmeisesti tämä asuste on nyt todella suosittu. |
| Undoubtedly, this is the best outfit of the party. | Epäilemättä tämä on juhlan paras asu. |
Mid-Sentence Placement
You can also place attitude adverbs in the middle of the clause. When you do, they usually sit right after the subject and the conjugated verb.
| The new collection has unfortunately been designed only for young people. | Uusi mallisto on valitettavasti suunniteltu vain nuorille. |
| Every outfit naturally needs a good accessory. | Jokainen asu tarvitsee luonnollisesti hyvän asusteen. |
| Students understandably buy only cheap clothes. | Opiskelijat ostavat ymmärrettävästi vain halpoja vaatteita. |
Drawing Conclusions
Adverbs like oletettavasti (presumably) and nähtävästi (evidently) are useful for making deductions about the trends you see. They follow the exact same placement rules.
| Presumably, fashion will change again soon. | Oletettavasti muoti muuttuu taas pian. |
| This outfit has evidently received a lot of attention. | Tämä asu on nähtävästi saanut paljon huomiota. |
