Questions & Answers about او هرگز معشوق خود را فراموش نکرد.
How does the word معشوق fit the Arabic passive participle pattern we are learning?
It uses the Maf'ul (ma-C1-C2-u-C3) pattern to indicate the person receiving an action. The three-letter root is ع-ش-ق ('-sh-q), which relates to love or passion. When you plug those letters into the pattern, you get معشوق (ma'shuq), literally meaning 'the one who is loved' or 'beloved'. For context, the active participle (the one doing the loving) is عاشق (lover).
Why do we use خود here instead of simply attaching a possessive pronoun like ش?
While you might sometimes hear معشوقش, using خود (self/own) is the standard and most unambiguous way to show possession when the owner is the subject of the sentence. It makes it crystal clear that he did not forget his own beloved.
The adverb هرگز (never) is placed right after the subject. Could it go later in the sentence?
Yes, Farsi word order for adverbs is quite flexible. You could place هرگز right before the verb compound (او معشوق خود را هرگز فراموش نکرد). Putting it earlier in the sentence, as it is here, is very natural and puts a slight emphasis on the absolute nature of the 'never'.
Why is the verb in the simple past (نکرد) rather than the past continuous/imperfective (نمیکرد), since 'never' implies a long period of time?
In Farsi, if the action is viewed as a single, absolute truth or a completed overarching fact about the past, the simple past is used. 'He did not forget' is a definitive fact here. If you used the imperfective (فراموش نمیکرد), it would mean something more like 'he used to never forget' (focusing on a repeated habit in the past).
