From Lesson 399:The metaphorical Ezafe·Farsi

Questions & Answers about بعد از دیدن تو، غنچه‌ی شادی در قلبم باز شد.

How does the metaphorical Ezafe work in ghonche-ye shadi?
This is a classic Ezafe-ye Tashbihi (metaphorical Ezafe). It directly equates the two nouns: happiness (shadi) is the bud (ghonche). In Farsi structural metaphors, the metaphorical image (ghonche) usually comes first, connected by the Ezafe to the abstract concept it describes (shadi).
Why do we use the infinitive didan here instead of a conjugated verb?
In Farsi, after compound prepositions like ba'd az (after) or qabl az (before), you can use a full conjugated clause, but it is very common and elegant to use the infinitive as a verbal noun (gerund). Linked with an Ezafe, didan-e to translates literally as the seeing of you.
Why does ghonche take an extra ye (ی) before shadi?
The word ghonche ends in a silent 'heh' (ه) that makes an 'e' sound. When adding the Ezafe vowel '-e' to a word ending in a vowel, a 'y' sound is inserted to connect them smoothly. In modern writing, this is represented by adding a ye (ی) after the silent 'heh', resulting in ghonche-ye.
Why is the verb baz shod used instead of baz kard?
baz shodan is an intransitive verb meaning to open (on its own), whereas baz kardan is transitive (to open something). Since the bud of happiness is opening spontaneously rather than being opened by an outside force, we must use the shodan form.
