Questions & Answers about او یکی از بهترین سنگتراشهای جهان است.
Why isn't there an Ezafe between بهترین (best) and سنگتراشهای (sculptors)?
Unlike regular adjectives which follow the noun and require an Ezafe (like سنگتراشِ خوب for "good sculptor"), superlative adjectives ending in -ترین (-tarin) come before the noun they modify. When a superlative precedes a noun, no Ezafe is used between them.
We usually use singular nouns after numbers in Farsi. Why is سنگتراش plural here (سنگتراشهای)?
While it's true that Farsi uses singular nouns after exact numbers (like دو سنگتراش for "two sculptors"), the structure یکی از (one of) is a partitive construction. Because you are singling someone out from a larger group, the noun that follows must be plural, exactly as it is in English.
What is the function of the Ezafe at the end of سنگتراشهای?
The Ezafe links the core noun phrase ("the best sculptors") to "the world", creating the meaning "sculptors of the world". Because the plural suffix ها (-ha) ends in a vowel, the Ezafe takes the phonetic glide ی (-ye) to connect smoothly to جهان (world).
How is the word سنگتراش (sculptor) formed?
It is a compound noun made of سنگ (stone) and تراش (the present stem of تراشیدن, meaning "to carve" or "to shave"). Combining a noun with a verb's present stem is a very common Farsi pattern for creating job titles or describing what someone does—in this case, a "stone-carver".
