Questions & Answers about در باغ گیاهشناسی، گیاهان زیادی از جمله گیاهان استوایی وجود دارند.
What does az jomle literally mean, and does it need an ezafe?
Literally, it translates to "from the sentence" or "from the totality." In Farsi, it acts as a discourse marker meaning "including" or "among which" to provide examples. Notice that it does not take an ezafe to connect to the next noun; you just say az jomle directly followed by the example (giyāhān-e ostovāyi).
How is the word giyāh-shenāsi (botanical) constructed?
It is built from giyāh (plant) and the suffix -shenāsi (the study or science of). You will see -shenāsi used to form the names of many academic fields, such as zist-shenāsi (biology) or ravān-shenāsi (psychology). Therefore, bāgh-e giyāh-shenāsi literally means "garden of plant-study."
Why does ziyād have an -i at the end in the phrase giyāhān-e ziyādi?
This -i is the indefinite marker. When expressing "many" or "a lot of" a specific noun in this structure, Farsi commonly links the plural noun and adjective with an ezafe and adds the indefinite -i to the adjective. So giyāhān-e ziyādi effectively means "a large, unspecified number of plants."
The subject is inanimate (plants), so why does the verb vojud dārand take the plural ending -and?
While inanimate plural subjects typically take singular verbs in everyday spoken Farsi, written or formal Farsi often allows plural verbs for them. Additionally, plants and trees frequently take the traditionally "animate" plural suffix -ān (as in giyāhān instead of giyāhhā), which makes pairing them with a plural verb feel very natural and correct in this context.
