تمرینِ امروز سخت است.

From Lesson 307:The classroom·Farsi

Questions & Answers about تمرینِ امروز سخت است.

Why do we use an Ezafe between تمرین and امروز?
In Farsi, time words like امروز (today) act as nouns in this context. Just like linking a possessed object to its owner, the Ezafe links the exercise to the day it belongs to, literally meaning "the exercise of today."
Why isn't there an Ezafe before سخت?
Because سخت (hard) is the predicate describing the state of the exercise, not an adjective directly attached to the noun. We are saying "The exercise IS hard," rather than "the hard exercise" (تمرینِ سخت).
How is this sentence pronounced in everyday spoken Farsi?
In casual speech, the formal verb است (is) merges with the preceding word. Since سخت ends in a consonant, it drops the "a" and "s" and simply takes an -e sound at the end, becoming سخته. The spoken sentence is تمرین امروز سخته.
Does سخت mean "hard" as in difficult, or "hard" as in solid?
It actually means both! In Farsi, سخت is a very versatile word. It can describe a difficult concept or task, like this exercise, but it can also describe physical hardness or severity.
