How would a native speaker say this sentence in casual, everyday speech?
In spoken Farsi, یک (yek) is almost always shortened to یه (ye). Additionally, the verb است (ast) usually attaches to the end of the previous word as an -e sound. So, instead of این یک قول است (in yek ghowl ast), you will usually hear این یه قوله (in ye ghowle).
Why is the verb است (is) at the very end of the sentence?
Farsi uses a Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) word order. Even in very simple descriptive sentences like this one, the verb (in this case, است meaning "is") almost always acts as the anchor at the very end of the sentence.
If قول (ghowl) is the noun "promise", how do I say the verb "to promise"?
You turn it into a compound verb by adding دادن (dadan), which means "to give". So, قول دادن (ghowl dadan) literally means "to give a promise", and this is the standard way to express the verb "to promise" in Farsi.
