Questions & Answers about نسبت زنان در این شرکت سی درصد است.
Why is the verb singular (است) when the sentence is talking about plural women (زنان)?
The true subject of the sentence is نسبت (proportion), which is singular. In Farsi, just like in English, the verb agrees with the head noun of the subject phrase. Since we are saying "The proportion ... is", the verb takes the singular form است.
How do we say "thirty percent" here, and does it need any connecting words?
You simply place the number directly before the word درصد (percent). Here, سی (thirty) + درصد gives us سی درصد. You don't need any extra words or prepositions to form the basic percentage phrase.
How do we link "proportion" and "women" in the phrase نسبت زنان?
By using the Ezāfe. An invisible "e" sound is added to the end of نسبت (nesbat) to link it to زنان (zanan). Pronouncing it as nesbat-e zanan acts exactly like "proportion of women" in English.
If the sentence instead started with "Thirty percent of women...", would the verb still be singular?
No, it would become plural. If you changed the subject to سی درصدِ زنان (Thirty percent of women), the logical subject shifts to the people being counted (the plural women). The verb at the end of the sentence would change from است (is) to a plural verb like هستند (are).
