Questions & Answers about من هم ساندویچ گرمی میخواهم هم نوشابهی سردی.
Where exactly does the indefinite -i (meaning "a") attach in ساندویچ گرمی?
It attaches to the very end of the noun phrase. Instead of putting the indefinite marker right after the noun, Farsi links the noun and adjective first with an Ezafe (ساندویچِ گرم, sândevich-e garm), and then adds the indefinite -i to the adjective. This gives us ساندویچ گرمی (sândevich-e garm-i), meaning "a warm sandwich".
In نوشابهی سردی, why is there an extra ی before the adjective?
The word for soda, نوشابه (nushâbe), ends in a silent "h" which sounds like "e". Because Farsi doesn't like two vowels right next to each other, we use a "y" sound to connect the noun to the Ezafe. In writing, this is shown by adding ی to the end of the noun. So, "a cold soda" is pronounced "nushâbe-ye sard-i".
How does the هم ... هم ... structure work here?
The word هم (ham) usually means "also" or "too", but when you repeat it before two different things in a list, it translates to "both [item A] and [item B]". Here, it gives us هم ساندویچ... هم نوشابه... (both a sandwich... and a soda...).
Why is the verb میخواهم (I want) in the middle of the sentence instead of at the end?
While Farsi normally places verbs at the very end of a sentence, the هم ... هم ... (both... and...) structure allows for some flexibility. To avoid making the sentence feel too bottom-heavy with a long list of nouns, speakers often place the verb right after the first item. Saying من هم ساندویچ گرمی هم نوشابهی سردی میخواهم is also grammatically correct, but putting the verb in the middle sounds very natural in everyday speech.
