Questions & Answers about قبل از اینکه دخلو بشمارم، کرکره رو میبندم.
Why do we use the subjunctive verb beshmaram instead of the regular present tense?
The phrase ghabl az inke (before) always triggers the present subjunctive for the verb that follows it. Because the counting hasn't happened yet at the time the shutter is closed, Farsi treats it as a pending action.
What is dakhl-o, and where does the -o come from?
Dakhl refers to a shop's daily takings or the cash register itself. The -o attached to it is the spoken Farsi version of the direct object marker ra, since the till is the specific thing being counted.
Why is the direct object marker ro in karkare ro, instead of just -o like in dakhl-o?
It depends on the last sound of the preceding word. Dakhl ends in a consonant, so we just add -o. However, karkare (rolling shutter) ends in an "e" vowel sound. To avoid two vowels clashing, spoken Farsi uses ro after words ending in vowels.
What is the infinitive for beshmaram (I count)?
The infinitive is shomordan (to count), and its present stem is shomar. To make the subjunctive, we add the be- prefix and the -am ending. In spoken Farsi, the middle vowel is often dropped, shortening beshomaram to beshmaram.
