Questions & Answers about این شهر هزار خیابان دارد.
I thought present tense verbs start with the prefix mi-. Why is it just dârad?
The verb dâshtan (to have) is a very common exception! Unlike most verbs in Farsi, its simple present tense does not take the mi- prefix. To say "it has", you simply combine the present stem dâr with the third-person singular ending -ad to get dârad.
Why do we use the -ad ending on the verb here?
The ending -ad is used for "he", "she", or "it". The subject of this sentence is in shahr (this city). Since a city is an "it" (third-person singular), the verb takes the -ad ending.
Since there are a thousand of them, why isn't the word for streets plural (khiyâbân-hâ)?
In Farsi, whenever a noun is preceded by a number, it always stays in its singular form. So, instead of saying "a thousand streets", Farsi logic literally says "a thousand street" (hezâr khiyâbân). You will never use the plural suffix -hâ right after a specific number.
The translation says "a thousand", but there is no word for "a" or "one" in the Farsi sentence. Is something missing?
No, it is perfectly complete! The word hezâr inherently means "a thousand" or "one thousand". You do not need to add the word yek (one) in front of it unless you want to put heavy emphasis on the exact quantity.
