Questions & Answers about دلفینی که با آن شنا میکنیم باهوش است.
Why do we say bâ ân ("with it") when the English translation just says "that we swim with"?
This is a key difference in Farsi! When a relative clause (the part starting with ke) involves a preposition like bâ (with), Farsi requires you to include a pronoun with it inside the clause. So, literally, Farsi says "the dolphin that we swim with it". This extra "it" (ân) is called a resumptive pronoun.
Why is there an -i at the end of dolfin-i? Doesn't that mean "a dolphin" instead of "the dolphin"?
Normally, yes! However, when a noun comes right before ke (that/which), the -i suffix acts as a "pointer" to single out that specific noun. It tells us we are about to describe a specific dolphin. So, dolfin-i ke... means "the specific dolphin that...".
Why do we use ân (it/that) for the dolphin? Could we use u (he/she)?
In formal and standard Farsi, u is strictly for humans, while ân is used for inanimate objects and animals. So for a dolphin, ân is the grammatically correct choice. You will use ân for animals even if they are smart or have a known gender.
How is the word bâhush (smart) formed?
Bâhush is a compound word made of the preposition bâ (with) and the noun hush (intelligence, mind, or sense). So, a creature that is "with intelligence" is smart!
