Why is there an ezâfe (the -ye sound) in be jâ-ye?
Be jâ-ye translates to "instead of", but literally it means "in the place of". Because jâ (place) is a noun, it needs the ezâfe (the linking -ye) to connect it to the following noun, felez (metal).
Why do we use the preposition az (from) before marmar (marble)?
The verb "to use" in Farsi is the compound verb estefâde kardan. This verb always requires the preposition az to introduce the thing being used. So literally, Farsi speakers say they "do use from" marmar.
Could I put be jâ-ye felez (instead of metal) at the end of the sentence?
It is much better to keep it before the verb. Farsi strongly prefers the verb at the very end. You could swap the middle parts and say az marmar be jâ-ye felez estefâde mi-konam, but you shouldn't put be jâ-ye felez after the verb.
Why doesn't in (this) have an ezâfe connecting it to miz (table)?
Demonstrative words like in (this) and ân (that) come before the noun and do not take an ezâfe. However, the adjective modern comes after the noun, so it does need the ezâfe, giving us in miz-e modern (this modern table).
