Questions & Answers about بدترین فیلم کمترین نمره را گرفت.
Is the Farsi word for 'worst' irregular like it is in English?
Surprisingly, no! In English, 'bad' changes completely to 'worse' and 'worst'. But in Farsi, the word for bad (bad) is completely regular. You simply add the standard superlative suffix -tarin to make bad-tarin (worst).
Why is kam-tarin translated as 'lowest' instead of 'least'?
The adjective kam means 'little' or 'few', so kam-tarin literally means 'least'. (Notice that Farsi again just uses the regular suffix, unlike the English irregular 'least'). However, when talking about a score or grade (nomre), Farsi speakers use kam to mean 'low'. Therefore, kam-tarin nomre translates most naturally to English as 'the lowest score'.
Why isn't there an ezafe (the connecting 'e' sound) between the adjectives and the nouns?
Normal adjectives come after the noun and use the ezafe (like film-e bad for 'bad film'). But superlative adjectives ending in -tarin are an important exception: they always come before the noun, and they do not use the ezafe. That is why we say bad-tarin film instead of using an 'e' sound.
Why does the direct object marker rā come after nomre instead of the adjective?
rā is used to mark a specific direct object. Because the verb gereft (got/received) is acting on the entire noun phrase kam-tarin nomre (the lowest score), the marker rā is placed at the very end of that phrase to show exactly what was received.
