Questions & Answers about گوشی را به همکار من بدهید.
How do we make the formal command بدهید?
To make a formal or plural command, we take the prefix بـ (be-), add the present stem of the verb, and attach the plural ending ـید (-id). The verb to give is دادن (dadan), and its present stem is ده (deh). Putting it together gives us بدهید (bedehid).
Does بدهید mean I am talking to a group of people?
It can, but not always! In Farsi, the plural ending ـید (-id) is used both when talking to multiple people and when addressing just one person politely or formally. You would use this form with a stranger, a boss, or an older person.
Why is را placed right after گوشی?
The word را (ra) marks a specific direct object in a sentence. Because you are telling someone to give a specific phone rather than just any phone, we must place را directly after گوشی.
How does همکار من translate to my colleague?
To show possession in Farsi, we use a spoken connector called the ezafe. Even though it is usually not written in the Persian alphabet, it adds an e sound between the words. So همکار (colleague) attached to من (me) is pronounced hamkar-e man, which means my colleague.
