Questions & Answers about برادرم یک مشکل بزرگ دارد.
Why doesn't the verb dârad have the mi- prefix like other present tense verbs?
The verb dâshtan (to have) is a special exception in Farsi. While most regular present tense verbs need the mi- prefix, dâshtan does not use it. Since the subject is barâdaram (my brother), we just take the present stem dâr- and add the third-person singular ending -ad to make dârad.
How is 'my brother' formed in the word barâdaram?
In Farsi, you can show ownership by adding a possessive suffix to the end of a noun. The word for brother is barâdar, and the suffix for 'my' is -am. Put them together and you get barâdaram.
Why is the adjective bozorg (big) placed after moshkel (problem)?
Unlike in English, Farsi adjectives usually come after the noun they describe. When you connect a noun to an adjective, you link them with a short 'e' sound called the Ezafe. Even though it is not written in the Farsi text here, it is pronounced as moshkel-e bozorg.
Is the word yek used as 'a' or 'one' in this sentence?
It acts as both! While yek is the number 'one', Farsi very commonly uses it just like the English words 'a' or 'an' to introduce a single, non-specific thing. Here, it introduces 'a big problem'.
