Questions & Answers about یک نقشه روی دیوار است.
In English, "one map" is singular anyway. What would happen if we wanted to say "two maps"?
In Farsi, nouns that come after numbers are always singular. So even if you wanted to say "two maps" or "ten maps", you would still use the singular word for map, نقشه, instead of its plural form. For example, "two maps" is simply دو نقشه.
Why does the word for "on" (روی) sound like "ruye" here?
The base word for "on" is رو (ru). When it connects to the noun that follows it (دیوار, wall), it needs a little connecting sound called the ezafe. Because رو ends in a vowel, we add a "ye" sound to connect them, making it روی (ruye). This literally links "on" to "wall".
Why does the word for map, نقشه, end in the letter 'h' (ه) if it is pronounced "naghshe"?
In Farsi, when the letter ه (heh) is at the very end of a word, it is often a silent letter that just makes a short "e" sound. You will see this rule everywhere in Farsi, where words ending in ه are pronounced with a final "e".
Why is the word for "is" (است) at the very end of the sentence?
Farsi sentence structure is different from English. It is a Subject-Object-Verb language, meaning the main verb is almost always placed at the very end of the sentence. So instead of "One map is on the wall", Farsi naturally says "One map on the wall is".
