In Farsi, you can show possession by attaching a small ending directly to the noun. Here, the word کلاهش (kolahesh) combines کلاه (kolah, meaning "hat") with the ending ـَش (-ash, meaning "his").

Could کلاهش also mean "her hat"?

Yes! Farsi doesn't have gendered pronouns. The ending ـَش (-ash) can mean "his", "her", or "its". We translated it as "his" here, but depending on the context, it could easily mean "her hat is big".

The word کلاه ends in the letter ه. Does this change how we attach the ـَش ending?

Not in this case. Because the ه in کلاه (kolah) makes a strong consonant "h" sound, you simply add the ـَش (-ash) ending normally. It is pronounced "ko-lah-esh". If a word ended in a silent ه making an "e" or "a" sound, we would need to add an extra helper letter first.

Why is است (is) at the very end of the sentence?

In Farsi, the verb almost always goes at the very end of the sentence. Even though in English we say "His hat is big", the literal word order in Farsi is "his-hat big is" (کلاهش بزرگ است).
